AI has already changed marketing.
That conversation is long long over
What we are dealing with now isn’t AI adoption. It’s AI consequence: both good and bad.
Over the last few years, marketing teams and businesses in Australia and beyond were suddenly handed a piece of revolutionary technology that removed so much friction almost overnight (yes, “AI”).
Suddenly, things that were once slow, expensive or simply impossible became easy, fast and cheap.
✓ Content at scale.
✓ Personalisation at scale.
✓ Testing at scale.
✓ Output at scale.
✓ Reach at scale.
And like most industries given that kind of power, marketing ran with it. Hard (of course!).
Now we are at the point where we need to stop, take a breath, and ask a far more important question.
Just because we can do something, doesn’t mean we should by default.
The uncomfortable truth about modern marketing
Marketing has been given a gift with AI. But we are in danger of turning it into a liability.
In the past, there were natural limits to marketing.
You couldn’t realistically flood every channel, every inbox and every platform with endless variations of content. Human time, cost and effort acted as a filter. They forced restraint. They forced prioritisation. They forced thought.
AI suddenly removed those limits.
So (understandably), what I’m seeing every single day is marketers confusing volume with value.
✓ More posts.
✓ More emails.
✓ More ads.
✓ More “touchpoints”.
The underlying assumption seems to be that if something works, then more of it must work even better.
However, that assumption is wrong. Why? Because a humble human is at the pointy end of that and we aren’t machines.
Customers aren’t spreadsheets or ‘mindless consumers’. We are real humans, and humans feel the difference between considered communication and relentless noise.
Marketing doesn’t exist to prove how productive we are. It exists to earn attention, trust and decision-making from real people. Let’s not put the cart before the horse!

Business efficiency is not the same as business progress
SURE! AI has made marketing more efficient. That part is undeniable.
But efficiency without human-centred judgement isn’t progress. It’s just sheer acceleration.
What is really happening:
- If your message is unclear, AI will scale that confusion faster.
- If your strategy is weak, AI will amplify it.
- If your brand lacks restraint, AI will happily help you overwhelm your audience.
Speed is neutral. Scale is neutral. However, technology doesn’t decide what is valuable. Humans do.
When efficiency becomes the goal instead of effectiveness, marketing starts to eat itself.
- Impressions may increase but actual action declines.
- Output definitely rises but actual engagement falls.
- Awareness my improve but actual trust quietly erodes.
And once all of these REAL stats are damaged, no amount of optimisation can fix it.
AI is a mirror in marketing, not a replacement
One of the biggest mistakes I see businesses make is treating AI like a substitute for thinking.
It’s not. AI is actually a mirror.
It reflects whatever you feed it. Strategy, taste, values, judgement or the absence of them.
Strong marketers use AI to sharpen thinking. Lazy marketers use AI to avoid it.
The uncomfortable reality is that AI is exposing weaknesses that were already there. Poor positioning. Vague messaging. Indistinct brands. Overreliance on tactics instead of strategy.
AI didn’t create these problems. It simply removed the buffers that used to hide them.
The rehumanisation paradox in the AI era
Here’s what is really happening in marketing right now.
AI is lifting the floor. The worst executions are getting better. The average quality of output is improving across the board. That is a good thing.
At the same time, truly exceptional marketing is becoming rarer.
When everyone has access to the same tools, the same capabilities and the same shortcuts, the middle ‘average’ becomes crowded very quickly. However, truly standing out with distinction becomes harder, not easier.
This is where rehumanisation in marketing becomes a commercial advantage.
High-end marketing now requires more human input, not less.
More judgement.
More context.
More restraint.
More responsibility.
Human creativity, intuition and experience are no longer nice-to-haves; they’re the differentiator.
AI can improve bad work. It cannot replace taste, context, judgement or expertise.
What this means for modern businesses
This isn’t just a marketing issue. It’s a business issue.
Marketing still exists for one reason: to influence human decision-making.
- Customers are people.
- Buyers are people.
- Stakeholders are people.
When businesses forget that, marketing becomes mechanical; and mechanical marketing might function, but it doesn’t persuade or inspire.
Oh, can I just clarify: rehumanising marketing doesn’t mean rejecting AI.
It means protecting the human side of decision-making while letting technology handle the drudgery.
- It means choosing quality over noise.
- Judgement over automation.
- Strategy over shortcuts.
- Empathy over mass production.
A marketing recalibration, not a retreat
This isn’t a step backwards. It’s a step forward.
The marketers and businesses that win from here won’t be the ones who produce the most. They’ll be the ones who think the clearest about customers and context.
- AI should make marketing more human, not less.
- AI should make marketing more intentional, not more frantic.
- AI should make marketing more responsible, not more reckless.
The next phase of marketing belongs to those who understand this recalibration and act on it now.
Because in an AI-driven world, human judgement is no longer optional; it’s the product.
